My question is, will the Mormon Church work to undo the results of Prop 8? Will the Mormon Church stay out of this issue in the future or will it work to help pass marriage equality? I ask these things because in my mind they show *real* change.Jayhuckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07350570856329297943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835564038959249094.post-18805710617974041662011-09-05T04:02:19.066-07:002011-09-05T04:02:19.066-07:00Mitch,
No matter what people may say 'technic...Mitch,

No matter what people may say 'technically speaking' about an executive secretary being part of the Bishopric, I can tell you from my experience as an Exec. Sec. that many times you will function as a "third counselor". The Bishop I served with probably asked for my advice more than he ever did from either of his counselors, who were always busy taking care of the auxiliaries and programs they had been given assignments to oversee. I was the one who was constantly with the Bishop, and who he turned to first. Don't let anyone diminish the importance of what you are doing.Nealhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03943975175380497835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835564038959249094.post-27374887072722308442011-09-04T19:52:32.048-07:002011-09-04T19:52:32.048-07:00Thank you again for sharing such personal thoughts...Thank you again for sharing such personal thoughts. I appreciate all that you are doing to prom...Mitch,
I appreciate all that you are doing to promote faith and understanding in these very difficult times.

This may be silly, but I think it is important that you do not refer to yourself as a "member of the Bishopric". It is clearly stated in Handbook 1 Section 2 (which you should now have access to). It is also stated in Handbook 2 (available to everyone) that "The executive secretary is an assistant to the bishopric" (not a member of the bishopric.

I feel this distinction is important because the term "bishopric" carries more weight in Mormondom than does "executive secretary". This is not saying that you would be unable to serve in a bishopric as this and all other callings in the church have nothing to do with sexual orientation. It is all about worthiness. That being said an unmarried man cannot become a bishop. Bishopric members can be unmarried but this is very rare in the church.

Although most members of the church will understand the duties of the executive secretary, many people outside the church will not. Claiming you are a member of the Bishopric places unduly authority to the things you says as a member of a bishopric.

I applaud you resolve to live the Savoir's teachings and your desire to increase awareness and understanding both in and outside the church.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13200219422689622607noreply@blogger.com
